The $130 check that transferred the rights of Superman to DC Comics sold for $160,000 in an Internet auction on Monday.

The Detective Comics check was written to Joe Shuster and Jerome Siegel to give up their claim for the iconic comic-book character who wore an “S” on his chest in 1938.

ComicConnect co-owner Vincent Zurolo said the idea of superheroes began with Superman. ComicConnect, which originates in New York, held the Internet auction. He said the $130 basically began the billion-dollar industry, citing the other commonly heard of superheroes: Spider-man, Batman, X-Men, Iron Man, etc.

And, much like superman, all of these have their own empire in movies and merchandise.

Zurzolo said the check is considered to be the “holy grail” for millions of comic book collectors and fans. He said people should consider what the world would be like if the check had not been written. Zurzolo said it’s possible the comic book industry would be non-existent.

The agreement that Shuster and Siegel signed to sell the rights in the late 1930s came back to bite them and their heirs, as they sued both DC Comics and the parent company Warner Bros. The Cleveland boys were childhood friends and sons of Jewish immigrants. They generated Superman while in their 20s and offered to sell the character in various places before DC comics bought it.

According to ComicConnect, Shuster was completely broke and working as a delivery man in 1978 when the first Superman movie was released. Worse, the $130 payment was added to a $402 check that failed to spell the boys’ name correctly, which forced them to endorse it correctly and incorrectly so they could get paid. Shuster passed away in 1992; Siegel died four years later in 1996.

The firm sold the check on behalf of a DC Comic employee’s heirs. It had been put away in a drawer for several decades. Zurzolo kept the buyer anonymous.

The check auction was held not long after the first issue of Action Comics, introducing the red-caped superhero, was sold for $2.16 million in December. The Action Comics comic was produced in 1938 and sold for 10 cents.

Speaking of bizarre things! In most developed nations, you use toilet paper, but now there’s a product that is trying to make toilet paper obsolete. Welcome to your toilet the Comfort Wipe.

It’s touted as being a sure way to be clean hygienically. No longer is there that question of any fecal matter somehow getting on your fingers. It seems to be sensible, if it does all that the Comfort Wipe is purported to do.

If you are a germaphobe, like Howie Mondel (American comedian), or physically disabled, it should be a very useful tool. It probably would do well for you if you are one of the many obese people trying to cope with the acquired hardships of daily living. Well, how does this Comfort Wipe work to wipe my butt, anyway, you may ask.

As a task analysis for your new, ultra-modern Comfort Wipe, here is how it is supposed to work. Instead of wadding up a lot of toilet paper, you can stuff it through the wand of the amazing Comfort Wipe, and efficiently do this chore of cleaning the rectum. The Comfort Wipe can easily be washed as needed with soap, water, and a disinfectant such as Lysol. Isn’t this wonderful? Even if you are physically fit, with no impeding fat or disability, maybe this is just the toilet tool for you, too. You will never have to touch soiled toilet paper again!

Lewis, Iowa, is one of the smallest towns in America, with a population of about 450, but has what may be the biggest bicycle in the world. It’s much bigger than the bike owned by Ukraine’s Leonid Stadnyk, who towers at 8’5’’ tall.

It must be the cold winters here that bring out the creativity in people from here to make something big. Of the bizarre things, Kool-Aid (AKA ghetto juice), which has gone big world-wide, was invented by a man born in this tiny town: Edwin Perkins.

Duane Weirich, a Lewis, Iowa resident and welder, masterfully built this gargantuan bicycle, after he received the news that the popular Great Bike Race Across Iowa was speeding through Lewis soon.

Weirich wanted to pay a huge tribute to the bike race by building this attention-getting canary yellow bike. The dimensions are a staggering 32-feet-long, and 18-feet-high. The innovative, creative welder said he will soon build the bike to ride. This, will be quite a “feet” to pedal this bike. Happy engineering, in building it, Duane Weirich.

Quantum physicists believe that tiny wormholes (holes in space and time) are ever popping in and out, in which they enter and leave our reality constantly. Sub-atomic particles do actually jump around constantly, and at times disappear. It is theorized that they travel through wormholes, leaping in and out throughout the dimensions of our universe (or universes).

Scientists now believe these microscopic wormholes (some theorize there are vast ones, too) can be enlarged so that extraterrestrials, and we, can be used for traveling through time and space. There are scientists who believe this mode of traveling has already been accomplished.

In theory, the microscopic wormholes vibrate within a wide range of random frequencies. Quantum physicists believe they can be somehow synchronized to allow millions of wormholes to be formed at the same time. This would permit us and other beings to transverse the entire cosmos instantly!
An analogy scientists use of this event is tuning forks. Think of the tuning forks vibrating to certain frequencies. Then, if you tap another tuning fork nearby other tuning forks at the same frequencies, they will vibrate in unison. A tuning fork nearby at a different frequency will still only vibrate independently from them, and not interfere with their set vibration.

Well, this may pose a problem in the future with such technology. Who knows where your son or daughter will go when you tell him or her to be home by midnight? At least no one will ask you for the car keys.

Venezuela has one of the most bizarre things in the world, called Catatumbo. It’s a rare natural phenomenon of eternal lightning that occurs only at the mouth of the Catatumbo River, at Lake Maracaibo Catatumbo.

Mysteriously, this is a cloud lightning with bolts of 5 kilometers length. For ten hours each night for up to 160 nights per year, the lightning puts on a show like a wild Fourth of July night in America. These remarkable lightning bolts strike over 280 times per hour, with engineers reporting an intensity of 400,000 amperes. The fantastic “light show” can be seen in a radius of 400 kilometers (248.5 miles).

Scientists say that this seemingly eternal lightning storm is from the collision of winds off the steep Andes Mountains. Sailors through the ages have used this almost permanent lightning storm to navigate in the region along the ocean.

Some of the very bizarre things in the world including these very skinny houses. This photo of the model by Jakub Szczesny, will be the world’s skinniest house, and is to be located in Warsaw, Poland. It will vary in width from 4 feet, to 28 inches — that’s narrower than a typical door, which is about 32 inches wide!

Szczesny is having it built for the same reason so many houses are narrow in New York City: lack of space. It will fill a veritable crack between a two buildings in the Wola district of Warsaw. When finished in December of 2011, it will be the skinniest house in the world.

This unusual house will be a home and work place for an Israeli writer, Etgar Keret. It will also be a “studio for invited guests—young creators and intellectuals from all over the world.” Certainly, the obese friends will have an incentive to slim down now.

In Guatemala City, a grandmother escaped a real life nightmare, when a large sinkhole opened under her bed as she slept. Innocenta Hernandez awakened to a nature-made cellar on July 18, 2011. A sink hole opened inches below her mattress. It is 12 meters (40 feet) deep!

Mrs. Hernandez was shocked by a deafening sound that turned out to be the earth imploding to leave a deep circular hole.

The 65-year-old said: “My son was crying because you never expect something like that in the bedroom.”

“When they raised the bed and I stood by this big hole my son then said that we have to call the firefighters because they need to come.
“Thanks to God and the holy Mary that nothing bad happened, it was an accident.”

Neighbors had already reported hearing bizarre things prior to this harrowing incident. There were sounds coming from the earth, which startled residents all week.
Guatemala’s national disaster relief agency arrived to Mrs Hernandez’s home to study the sinkhole, and decide if there was a danger to the community.

Investigator David De Leon said: “The whole city rests on volcanic material which means that some areas are not stable.”

Guatemala, then, is susceptible to sink holes abruptly just “dropping in” on people!

This circular object with the “Hapi and smile” logo, is actually a musical instrument: a metal drum. The rectangular shapes carved into the round structure are a purposed pattern of tongues, that when struck with a mallet or the fingers, it creates a pure tone.

Chords can be played by striking more than one tongue at a time. It is said to be played similarly to a hang drum, and has dampers built in to create a beautiful sound. Its music is radically different from the hang drum, or any other musical instrument, however.

There is a hole in the bottom that somehow enhances the tone and volume of the Hapi drum. When one of the tongues is struck the adjacent tongues emit a complementary sound that is harmonic to the note created by the struck tongue.

The hapi drum is available in D or E keys of 8 notes, and had 5 pentatonic scales. It is reportedly easy to learn to play, and comes in various colors. It makes beautiful sounds even with no music skill.

This savory-looking meal is a balut. It is nothing more than a fertilized duck embryo boiled while alive, and then eaten from its shell.

If this looks like it among the bizarre things to eat, perhaps it will be more appealing to know that it is believed to be an aphrodisiac. It’s naturally high in protein, and offered for you to enjoy in parts of Southeast Asia. It is commonly sold on the streets by vendors. In the Philippines, you can hear the vendor yelling, “Balut, balut”, until a customer arrives.

It is popular in Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia and Vietnam. It is often served with a beer. By the looks of it, perhaps it’s best to try after several beers. Balut means “wrapped” in Tagalog and Malay languages.

Filipinos prefer eating balut with salt, pepper, with a chili and vinegar mixture. Ideally, they eat it when 17 days old, before the beak, bones, and feathers form. In certain countries, however, they “love that crunch”, and devour it a few days later, when the bones are just forming.

In the Philippines, where it is especially popular, the egg shell is tapped to make a hole. Then, the delicious embryonic fluid is sucked out before peeling away the shell, and going for the prized main course, the duck embryo itself. All the contents can be eaten, although the white is sometimes passed up.

Bon appétit!
