Perched on a cliff in San Diego, California, reminiscent of Mary Shelley’s novel in which a scientist, Dr. Frankenstein, creates artificial life, Dr. Gerald Joyce can be considered his modern day counterpart. Dr. Joyce is also trying to create life, but in a thimble-size test tube, rather than from human body parts.

Although these are bizarre things, scientists and sci-fi fans have pondered this possibility for ages. Some people even think we will someday encounter an alien from another world, but Dr. Joyce is close to creating an alien life in the test tube.

It’s debatable among scientists as to what constitutes life, but some may say Dr. Joyce already created a life form in 2007.

In 2007, Dr. Joyce and his assistant, a graduate student, Tracey Lincoln, who is now a researcher at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, created a “molecule” in a test tube that could reproduce, and evolve by itself. According to Dr. Joyce, it “swapped jerry-built genes “in a test tube as long as it was fed the right “engineered ingredients”.

This is astounding, and also humorous, in that Jerry is a nickname for Gerald, which is Dr. Joyce’s first name. Perhaps, Jerry will be the name of the very first unanimously accepted artificial life form, if created by Dr. Joyce. After all, Dr. Frankenstein named his creation Frankenstein.

Lewis, Iowa, is one of the smallest towns in America, with a population of about 450, but has what may be the biggest bicycle in the world. It’s much bigger than the bike owned by Ukraine’s Leonid Stadnyk, who towers at 8’5’’ tall.

It must be the cold winters here that bring out the creativity in people from here to make something big. Of the bizarre things, Kool-Aid (AKA ghetto juice), which has gone big world-wide, was invented by a man born in this tiny town: Edwin Perkins.

Duane Weirich, a Lewis, Iowa resident and welder, masterfully built this gargantuan bicycle, after he received the news that the popular Great Bike Race Across Iowa was speeding through Lewis soon.

Weirich wanted to pay a huge tribute to the bike race by building this attention-getting canary yellow bike. The dimensions are a staggering 32-feet-long, and 18-feet-high. The innovative, creative welder said he will soon build the bike to ride. This, will be quite a “feet” to pedal this bike. Happy engineering, in building it, Duane Weirich.

These worms are strange animals, living at unbelievable depths and temperatures in the soil. Princeton University biologists discovered this incredible, ugly species of nematode at 1.3 kilometers beneath the surface in a gold-mining town called Beatrix, South Africa.

They were aptly named “Worms of Hell” by the biologists. Scientifically, however, Dr. Onstott, a member of the research team, named them Halicephalobus Mephisto, after the author Faust’s “The Devil Mephistopheles”.

This is the first time scientists have found multicellular life so deep in the soil, where temperatures are between 60 and 110 degrees Centigrade. It reproduces asexually, meaning offspring come from only one parent, and receives all its genes. Incredibly, this strange animal lived in fault rocks 3,000 years ago, as well. It fed on bacteria in this harsh environment, also.

Let’s just hope it stays now deep in the soil, and not in our backyard or home!

Don’t let looks deceive you. Of the strange people, this man may look like one of the strangest, since he’s sitting in a racing position on his speedy motorcycle, in juxtaposition with funeral bouquets behind him.

This is the body of 22-year-old David Morales Colon, who was shot to death. David’s family wanted people to remember him doing what he liked more than anything in the world, riding his motorcycle fast along the highway. Morales had received a brand new Honda CBR600 F4 motorcycle soon before his demise. His parents knew he was very fond of it, and enjoyed riding the new cycle more than anything in the world, he told them. Naturally, then, his family asked the funeral home to embalm David and set him in riding position. In this photo, he is at his wake.

The staff at the funeral home performed their task well. David Morales Colon looks like he’s in a position to win a motorcycle race. The news of this handling of David’s body created much controversy world-wide. It appears, though, that this procedure sets a precedent for the way funeral homes around the globe may contrive scenes of a person’s corpse, as it relates to their favorite hobbies, or perhaps their career. Hypothetically, for example, how would they oblige the family of a porn star, for example? How much of this would be just too much?

Possibly, this is not too much of a shock to the Puerto Rican citizens, as this occurred there. People there have been known customarily to allow a person’s body to sit in the living room a few days prior to their funeral.

The wave is a sandstone rock formation located in the United States of America. It’s a beautiful sight, but a lot of people have reportedly been lost there! It has a history of doing weird things to people’s sense of direction.

Many people have become lost, and very hard to find, due to the Wave. It is near the Arizona and Utah border, along the slopes of the Coyote Buttes. It is popular with hikers and photographers for its colorful, wavy forms. It is dangerous, however, because it is not only very rugged, but there is no trail leading to it.

The Wave is composed of Navajo Sandstone that is approximately 190 million years old. Scientists claim the sand dunes turned into hard rock over the ages, forming striations (layers). Erosion by weather has created this eerie landscape.

Facts are during the day, the light shifting on the terrain has caused a number of people to be lost. If you go there, bring a GPS device, topographic map and a compass. Don’t let this spectacular phenomenon snatch you, too!

Presenting the world’s largest ice cream cone. It can cool you off on any hot summer day, and give your taste buds a treat at the same time! It looks like a prop from Gulliver’s Travels, but is a real dessert. This delicious masterpiece was created in January, 2011 from the staff from an ice cream parlor, known as Mirco della Vecchia.

They put it together at the International Ice Cream Fair organized in Rimini Italy.

Here are the tasty facts about the world’s largest ice cream cone, which is documented in the Guinness Records:

The height was measured to be 2.82 meters (9 ft 2.63 in)

- It took 7 experts 30 total hours to build

- There were 2,000 wafers for the cone

- 700 Kg (1,540 lbs.) of white chocolate for the filling

- That’s over three-fourths of a ton!

- 5 scoops of sweet gelato for the toping. It weighed 70 Kg (about 150 lbs.)

What a big way to finish a fine meal!

La Rinconada (meaning “corner” in Spanish) is a small mining town in Peru which is located nearly 17,000 feet above sea level is considered the “highest” city in the world. It is very desolate because of the steep, snow covered, but stunning Andes mountains. The city is located on a permanently frozen glacier, and can only be reached by truck along the winding and treacherous mountain roads.

This city with the breathtaking snowy mountain views lies at a height of 5,100m (16,732.28 feet) above sea level. This is a few miles high, and the average person would need extra help from an oxygen tank to breathe.
They can boast that the population has grown significantly from 2001 to 2009 by 235%, to a lofty (excuse the pun) 30,000 inhabitants.
The economy is mainly based on the production of gold in the nearby mine. Many miners work at the gold mine owned by Corporación Ananea. Under the cachorreo system they work for 30 days without payment, which may cause you to think these are strange people. It is for them, however, the only way they can survive. Who knows! Perhaps, a few strike it lucky on occasion. On the 31st day they are allowed to take with them as much ore as they can carry on their shoulders. Whether the ore contains any gold is only by sheer chance.
If you are looking for a lofty place to live, this city is without plumbing or a sanitation system. To make life there even more challenging, there is significant mercury contamination due to the mining practices. Local miners must refine the ore by grinding and treating it with mercury. Then, they press all the mass through a cloth for filtering it. The amalgam that is produced is heated to remove the undesirable mercury. This is truly among the oddest places to live on our planet.

There are many bizarre things in our everyday world, which sometimes will surprise you. You’ve heard of prehistoric cave men, but there are cave people still today! In northeastern Iran you may even rent a cave home. It would seem that they are primitive, and in a remote location. The temperatures outside in Iraq’s summers can exceed 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46 Celsius), while inside one of these cave homes it’s a comfy 75 degrees (24 Celsius).

These unique homes are located at the base of Mount Sahand, and are 700 years old! They are actually carved from volcanic rock. The dwellings aren’t true underground homes due to a small portion of them sits above ground. However, much of the living space is buried; inhabitants can expect cooler temperatures without having to crank up the air conditioning.

As can see from the interior photo that the homes aren’t as primitive as you might think. Many amenities have been made in the last 700 years. There are modern doors and windows built into the more ancient looking carved out rooms. While you may think, also, that the area is like a scene from the Neolithic caveman days, it’s actually a “happening” resort area with hotels, restaurants and a special mineral water that is famous for its healing powers.
In today’s environmentally conscious “green” world, perhaps we should all consider having such a cool and comfortable home.

Depending on perspective,The largest flower in the world is either the Rafflesia arnoldii, or the Amorphophallus titanium. Both are from the rainforests of Indonesia, both are enormous, and both have terrible odors like rotten meat to attract insects for pollinating the plant. Both are very bizarre things.

Rafflesia arnoldi

The Rafflesia arnoldi has the world’s largest bloom, that often grow to 3 feet diameter, and may weigh up to 15 pounds. It has leaves, roots and stem, but they are hidden by the bloom. Rafflesia arnoldii is a parasite that attaches to a host plant for water and nourishment.

Amorphophallus titanum

Technically, the Amorphophallus titanium also known as Titan arum is not just one flower. It is actually a cluster of many tiny flowers, called an inflorescence. The Titan arum has the largest inflorescence of all flowering plants that are unbranched. The plant reaches heights of 12 feet and weigh up to 170 pounds!

What would you buy with a couple million dollar? A dream home? Can you imagine buying the most expensive car in the world at a whooping $1.9 million!?! Yes you heard me right, Bugatti Veyron is the world’s most expensive street legal car available today.

The French custom-made beauty is the fastest accelerating car reaching 0-60 in 2.5 seconds. It is also the fastest road legal car in the world. It is produced by Bugatti Automobiles SAS in France but designed and developed by the German Volkswagen Group.

At close to 2 million dollar, believe it or not, the Bugatti is still not the most expensive car ever sold in the world. Some crazy facts: The 1931 Bugatti Royale Kellner Coupe was sold for $8,700,000 in 1987. But that car is no longer available today.

As to who actually owns a Bugatti Veyron? Of course the very rich and famous namely Simon Cowell, the reality TV mogul, Tom Cruise, fashion designer Ralph Lauren.

I think I would much rather buy myself a beautiful home if I ever had that kind of money. What about you? If you had lots of money would you ever drop close to 2 million to buy yourself the most expensive ride?
